So, about this place...

Field House is a self catering apartment set within a larger period property. The hosts live upstairs and so are on hand, but the apartment is completely self-contained with its own access and off street parking. This is a no smoking, no pets property.

First Impressions?

I was utterly charmed. The house looks like the sort of place you might find described in an Enid Blyton story,  pale stone with beautiful bay windows and even flowers growing round the door. We received the warmest welcome from our host Marilyn and felt at ease and most welcome from the moment she greeted us.

Describe Field House in three words?

Homely, charming & welcoming.

Official Rating?

Visit England awarded Field House four stars and a Gold Award.

Location, Location, Location.

Field House is located in Killingworth village, about half an hour from Newcastle city centre. The adjacent village has a couple of pubs, historic church and a small park and Killingworth New Town with its shops and public transport links is just  a ten minute walk away. Views from the property take in open fields complete with resident horses. You feel like you’ve escaped to the country.

Best Thing About This Place?

The atmosphere created by the hosts and location, the feeling of really getting away from it all. The cottage is very well equipped but keeps a vintage, homely charm. The location feels much more rural than it actually is. Thoughtfully placed tables and chairs in the bay windows mean you can sit, relax and enjoy the scenery.  You wouldn’t know you were just a stones throw from a range of pubs and shops, and half an hour via public transport from the city centre.

Home Comforts?

The apartment is packed full of ’em. Comfortable beds, quality linen and plenty of storage in the bedrooms.  Fully equipped kitchen with plenty of cutlery and crockery, cooker, washer, fridge/freezer  and small appliances -coffee maker, microwave etc. No dishwasher or drier, though. Loved the fact we were left a nice welcome pack with bread, snacks, milk etc…even a bottle of wine. Good stocks of basics in the cupboard including condiments, coffee filters, cleaning sprays etc.

Things Helen Loves, spring flower arrangement

I was seriously impressed with the many above-and-beyond welcoming touches. Home-baked cakes on arrival, home-made marmalade and local honey in the fridge, a beautiful fresh flower arrangement in the lounge, even a TV guide. Not to mention the shelves of books and games and selection of toiletries in the bathroom Including Lush shower gels and a bottle of good old Matey bubble bath so even the littlest visitors can enjoy a soak.

Who is this place for?

Families and couples. Field House sleeps four people in two bedrooms, one twin and one double. It would make a great base if visiting family in the area, as we were, or if you were wanting to explore the wider region and were looking to avoid the expense and limitations of a hotel stay. It’s an over-used phrase but this really is a, ‘Home from Home’.

Value for money?

Excellent value for money. We paid around €260 for a four night stay for four people. Prices  vary depending on the season. They could charge more and still be great value.

Would I stay there again?

Yes, I genuinely hope I will. The children loved it, especially getting up each morning to see the horses in the field. The space and facilities of the property took a lot of stress out of the trip for me. This will be my first choice when visiting my home town  in the future.

We booked Field House directly with the owners. Full details can be found on the Field House Website.
