Discover 5 things to do in Berlin when you need to escape from the weather

You’ll never run out of things to do in Berlin. The German capital is famous for its many and varied attractions, from iconic museums to street art galleries.

You could fill a weekend in Berlin wandering the streets, relaxing in the parks and exploring the many open-air historical attractions but let’s be real- the weather might not play the game.

Luckily, whatever season you visit Berlin ( there’s no bad time, it’s an amazing destination!) there’s always plenty of indoor fun to be had in Berlin.

Here’s my 5 favourite indoor things to do in Berlin.

Time-Travel at The DDR Museum.

Ever wondered what daily life looked like behind the Berlin Wall? The DDR Museum is the place to visit for a glimpse into a lost world.

Trying our the Trabi driving experience. Harder than it looks!

Visitors are invited to take an interactive deep-dive into everyday life in the DDR. Highlights include a fully furnished reconstructed East German apartment and the opportunity to try your hand at driving a classic Trabi.

In contrast to the homeliness of some exhibits, you’ll also have the chance to look into the darker side of the DDR in a recreated prison cell and interrogation room.

A fascinating, family friendly museum that transports you back in time.

Find Your Inner Bond at The German Spy Museum

I can’t think of a more authentic location for a museum devoted to the art of espionage than Berlin.

Berlin was known as the ‘Capital of Spies’ and the German Spy Museum brings that reputation to life. Get to know the gadgets, crack the codes and try your hand at the Mission Impossible style laser maze. Expect to be amazed, this place has it all from the devious to the downright bizarre!

The German Spy Museum operates a dynamic pricing policy, so book online and in advance for guaranteed entry at the best price.

This is a museum I have visited several times. It’s hands on, fascinating and one of the most intriguing indoor things to do in Berlin!

A Different View of the Human Body at Body World

The Menschen Museum: Embrace it with an open mind and be prepared to see things in a whole different way when you leave. The Body Worlds Museum is dedicated to allowing the visitor to explore every aspect of the human body.

The human body exhibits are the work of Dr Gunter von Hagen and his  ‘plastination’ technique. I had reservations about visiting this one, but I was wrong. It’s a fascinating experience and family friendly; my six-year-old loved it!

There are several Body Worlds exhibitions around the world now, but this Berlin branch at the T.V Tower is the original. A unique Berlin indoor experience!

Take in Berlin Views from the Panoramapunkt

If you want to embrace the views but escape the weather, the Panoramapunkt on Potsdamer Platz is the place to go. The observation deck is located 100m up and is reached by riding the fastest elevator in Europe.

Once at the top you can enjoy an exhibition about the history of the iconic Potsdamer Platz, 360 views across Berlin and round off with coffee & cake in the 1930’s inspired Panorama Cafe.

Make Your Own Chocolate Bar at the World of Ritter Sport

Need a light hearted, cozy place in Berlin to spend a bit of time? Head for Ritter Sport Schokowelt. It’s a cafe, chocolate museum and chocolate making experience all in one and it’s great fun for everyone.

Follow the story of chocolate from tree-to-bar, enjoy the chocolate themed photo spots, meet the Ritter themed Berlin Bear and then whip up your own chocolate bar creation.

It takes about half an hour for your custom bar to be set and wrapped, the perfect opportunity to shop for some German chocolate goodies to take home and enjoy a coffee in the on-site, chocolate themed cafe.

Bonus Tip: Tropical Islands

If the weather really fails you, head to the tropics. That is Tropical Islands, Europe’s largest tropical indoor water park housed in an old airship hangar just a short journey from Berlin city centre.

In the dome you’ll find pools, beaches and waterfalls alongside a recreated rainforest complete with resident birds, turtles and fish. Tire yourself out on the waterslides and surf simulator before retiring to the sauna and wellness village.

Didn’t pack your swimwear? No problem! There’s a shopping boulevard that sells everything you need and tons of places to eat and drink.

All the details for Tropical Islands here, including day ticket prices and details of shuttle bus links from the train station if you are using public transport.
