Discover ancient woodland and a beautiful lakeside location bringing Scandinavian vibes to Northern Ireland

Finnebrogue Woods: a charming woodland escape located in the rolling countryside of Co. Down, a short drive out from Belfast. Part of a farming estate that has been in the same family for 60 years, Finnebrogue is the perfect place to slow down and reconnect.

It’s a beautiful spot, managed by a farming family who are bringing some Scandinavian vibes into the Northern Irish countryside. I loved discovering all that is on offer here and hope I can inspire more people to add this experience to their list of things to do in Northern Ireland.

Finnebrogue Woods & Lake

There is plenty of research that supports the idea that getting out into woodlands and around water is good for you. Finnebrogue is a good place to test the theory as the whole experience is based around a 30 acre lake surrounded by woodlands.

There are walks by the water and through the trees, with trails for younger walkers too. The open space, birdsong and thriving woodlands make Finnebrogue Woods feel like a real escape from the day-to-day but the trails are short and well marked, the terrain easy. A great place for a wander for all ages and abilities.

If you’re lucky enough to be visiting in the Spring, the woodland floor will be putting on a show: a carpet of Bluebells and Wood Anemone. Both flowers that thrive in ancient woodlands and are abundant here.

Fodder: The Cafe at Finnebrogue Woods

Fodder in the Woods is the on site farm shop and cafe serving up some Scandinavian influence alongside the best locally sourced, seasonally inspired ingredients.

When I say local, I do mean it. The grass fed Dexter Beef on the menu is raised on the farming estate of which Finnebrogue Woods is a part. It doesn’t get much more locally produced, slow food, low food miles than that.

The indoors-outdoors cafe is rustic and woodland to the core, built round a small kitchen and a tipi. Outside seating is carved wooden benches and seats carved from logs, alongside a wood burning firepit surrounded by benches draped with ( I think?) reindeer hides.

The menu has something for everyone, from a full Fodder breakfast featuring some of that estate raised Dexter Beef through to vegan and veggie options that include pakoras and bean burgers.

We actually decided to visit Fodder after spotting the signature hot chocolate with toasted marshmallows on Instagram. Enjoyed in the sunshine with the smell of woodsmoke in the air from the log fire, it did not disappoint.

When I say something for everyone, that includes the four legged friends of the family. Finnebrogue woods is a very dog friendly destination, as is Fodder. As well as plenty of outdoor seating and water dishes for the dogs, the menu includes special dog sausages and pupacino’s.

Little Wolf was, of course, indulged.

Adjacent to Fodder, find SHäp: the little shop in the woods with the Nordic inspired name. SHäp sells a lovely range of gift ideas and foodie things.

I had a year and still felt like there was a lot I wanted to do. NI has so much beyond the heavily promoted attractions, lovely and/or interesting as they are.
